Ripsaw Zombie Brain Cake + Tutorial

Zombie virus, blood clots and brain matter. Halloween is delicious. As is Ripsaw Jerky! That's why we've made this very special dessert to gross out our Halloween party guests. Want to make your own oozing undead brain cake?

Prep your cake:

Start with a 22cm round cake. Carve out a notch along the entire top with a serrated knife. Carve out the sides to make a nice rounded brain shape. Set your cake onto a board or serving plate.

Apply a thin coat of dark green frosting (we used whipped cream). Set in the fridge for at least 10 minutes.

For the squiggly brain tissue:

Fit a coupler or large round nozzle to a large piping bag. With a thin brush, paint 3 evenly spaced stripes of green gel colouring up the insides of the bag.

Fill with light green tinted frosting (again, we used whipped cream)

Pipe from the front edge all the way over the notch to fill in the centre of your brain. Then pipe wonky squiggles all over one side. It's ok to leave a few gaps. Repeat with the other side. Let it sit in the fridge while you prep the next steps.

For the blood clots:

Mix 1 cup glucose syrup with a small amount of green gel food colouring.

It's very thick and sticky, so we used a children's medicine applicator to suck up the zombie blood and squeeze in onto the cake. Simply fill large gaps in the squiggly brain tissue with gross blood clots.

For the oozy green cerebral fluid:

Mix 1 packet lime flavoured jelly with 1 1/2 cups boiling water. Stir to dissolve.

Cool in the fridge until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, but not yet set.

Gently spoon over your brain. Scrape any excess off your cake board.

Ripsaw Blade:

We used a brand new blade purchased for this project. New blades come with an oily coating so you MUST wash it thoroughly in hot soapy water. Be extremely careful of the sharp edges.

When dry, we scrubbed some dark green gel colour into the blade with paper towel to make blood stains.

After you set the blade in your cake, you can drip more of the glucose blood clot mixture over the teeth.
